69 years ago in South Africa, a group of 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 9 August 1956. It was a historic moment – the women were protesting against a proposed amendment to what was known as the Urban Areas Act which endorsed legislation that required black South Africans to carry an identity book known as the ‘pass.’
After handing over a petition to South African government representatives the women broke into song and since then the phrase ‘wathint’ abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo‘ (You Strike a Woman, You Strike a Rock) has come to universally represent the courage and strength of South African women.
South African women have a powerful legacy of fighting for their rights and standing against oppression. From the courageous women who marched to the Union Buildings in 1956 protesting against pass laws, to today’s activists pushing for equal rights, the spirit of resilience is woven into the very fabric of our society.

Each year, International Women's Day is marked by a unique theme that highlights different facets of women's rights and empowerment. This year, the focus is on honoring women’s achievements while addressing the persistent challenges they face. It's a moment to reflect on the strides made and recognize the ongoing work needed to ensure women everywhere can thrive equally and freely.
The Importance of Women in Society
Women are pivotal in every aspect of society—family units, leadership positions, education, and more. Their roles as caregivers, teachers, leaders, and innovators often go unvalued, but they truly are the backbone of our communities.
In South Africa, women have made noteworthy advancements, particularly in politics, education, and healthcare. For instance, women account for about 46% of the South African cabinet, a substantial representation that continues to increase. Despite this progress, women still face obstacles. Celebrating women's achievements on International Women’s Day is vital, not just for recognition but to inspire future generations to pursue equality.

Challenges Faced by Women
Even with strides made, women in South Africa confront numerous challenges. One in three women experiences gender-based violence, and the gender pay gap remains significant, with women earning approximately 27% less than their male counterparts. Access to education is also a concern, particularly for women in rural areas, where only 20% of girls complete secondary education.
Women’s Day is a crucial platform to raise awareness about these pressing issues. It fosters a sense of unity among women, encourages them to share their stories, and empowers them in the fight for a better future.
Celebrating Achievements
Today is about recognizing the achievements of women who have sparked change in their communities and beyond. From grassroots activists and successful entrepreneurs to inspiring artists and dedicated educators, women are continuously breaking barriers and creating pathways for future generations.
Celebrating these accomplishments not only honors the trailblazers but also motivates others to chase their dreams and make impactful contributions.
How to Celebrate International Women's Day
There are various meaningful ways to honor International Women's Day in South Africa:
Attend Local Events: Many communities organize marches, workshops, and panel discussions. Joining these events enhances awareness and strengthens community ties.
Support Women-Owned Businesses: Shopping at women-owned stores or backing female entrepreneurs promotes local growth and empowers women economically.
Additionally, take time to educate yourself and others about women's rights history in South Africa and engage in conversations with friends or family. Use your voice to advocate for policies that promote gender equality. Whether through social media, writing to local representatives, or getting involved in community actions, every single effort makes a difference.
Another way to celebrate is to appreciate the women in your life. A simple gesture of gratitude towards a mother, sister, friend, or mentor can uplift spirits and solidify bonds.
Embracing the Future Together
International Women's Day serves as a strong reminder of the resilience and strength of women in South Africa and globally. This day not only celebrates remarkable achievements but also shines a light on the obstacles that remain.
As we honor women who have fought for rights and continue to inspire change, let us also pledge to support one another in the work ahead. Together, we can nurture a world where all women are empowered to reach their full potential.

Let's carry the spirit of International Women's Day beyond March 9th and strive for a society where every woman is celebrated daily.
